I recently purchased my first recumbent (Aero) after realizing the performance potential over my DF bike. I have 600 miles on the bike so my bent legs are getting used to riding. I rode it today in my local club century and set a new personal record. My time was 4:50 @ 20.6 avg which absolutely put my prior DF century time to shame. The best part about it is that I'm not sore at all and could have kept riding. I'm not trying to brag at all, Just wanted to thank Bacchetta for building amazing bikes.

Great time. I'm guessing it was a fairly flat route, and it wasn't 108 degrees. :) I'm trying to get a group to bandit ride the Amtrak Century down the coast next weekend, since it sold out in a day. I still want a sub 5. HHH was just to freaking hot after 10am to keep the pace up, everyone suffered.

Mike - That's an outstanding performance in spite of Mark's rain on your parade and attempt to hijack your thread. You'll get used to it in time. The poor guy can't help himself. I think it was all the heat at HTH. Now he's planning a train heist?

So who's going to flag down the train so you and your group of recumbo desparados can board the train? Are you going to the boot the OCW riders off too? Even if you wear bandanas over your faces, your bikes are sure to be recongnized in the police line-up. But seriously, if I had a ride back to LA and wasn't such a slowpoke I'd consider joining your crew. I'm sure the weather will be fine and you'll even beat Cletus' best century.

I'm remembering laying on my back looking up at the sun and thinking wow, it's freaking hot. Sub 5 is an excellent time, and I'm envious. I think the heat got to everyone on the HHH. We were cooking along speed wise at the beginning, and literally cooking at the end.

Trying to get my wife to drop me off at the start for the Amtrak Century, since I don't need to come back. I'm really bummed it sold out in a day.

Congrats likewise Mike. GREAT Achievement! I dream of an under 5 hour century; likewise have an Aero to go for it; BUT this tired old engin just can't seem to get the job done. Again, Great time; keep up the good rides!

Hi Mike,

Great ride dude!
One "Q" did you pace line at all with them pesky DF'ers or did you just go and ride solo?
Either way it is the mantra of the DF world. The sub 5 hour century. I have done a few in my day and even a sub 10 double a couple of years ago on my Aero.
But these days I would be more than happy with a sub 5 hour century however it came.
Yet another report from a Bacchetta custormer with superior performance from his Bacchetta over his DF slow road bike...

So Mike, were you riding your new HED 3's? I assume they must have arrived by now. Did you notice much difference from your Sparticus wheels? (I think I know the answer already.)

Congratulations on the time. A great performance for a first bent century. I remember my first, right at 5 hrs. You bettered that. Sounds like you are really adjusting to that Eastern Aero. I'll pass your regards on to Scott.
Keep on rocking.

I rode in a paceline with 5 of my club members, they all ride DF's. We ride together often so I hang at the back of the paceline so thay can rotate and draft. When I take a pull I ride from the back directly to the front for my pull and then drift to the back so they can continue drafting, it works well and they appreciate it. My club only has 1 other recumbent rider out of over 500 members but they are really starting to show an interest after these rides.

I received my Hed 3's and they are very fast but had a problem with the rear wheel so I ran the Hed 3 front and rear stock wheel. I can't wait to get the rear wheel sorted out so I can run both. This was also the first time I've done a ride on all liquids, Hammer perpetuem and gel, I had plenty of energy and felt great after the ride. Be sure to tell Scott I said thanks.

Glad the Hammer products worked so well for you. They RULE!

Awesome ride. Very inspirational.

As a new Aero rider I'm just blown away by the bike and its easy cruisin'... by spring maybe I can start getting some good sustained watts going

For the past several years, I've been endurance mountain bike racing (24 races; Leadville 100 & 50) and find the combination of Perpetuem and Hammer Gel to just flat work better than anything else, particularly when the hours start stretching out. Under three hours, seems I can get by on anything... at about hour 4, the fun starts . Also, I find taking Hammmer's Endurolytes on a regular basis during ride really helps eliminate leg cramps later in the game.

Oh, and I DON'T work for Hammer Products.

Congrats on your first Century ride! And being a sub 5 hr at that! I have not yet rode a century ride yet. All the local rides I've ridden on are metric century or less. I can keep a sub 3 hr metric century and I hope when I do my first full century ride I can keep under 5 hours???

As for energy foods on the go, hammer and gel I've been noticing people talk about.
Are these home mixes or store items? And where could I pick up these energy foods? Are they just high calorie mixes, or high fiber, or what makes these items work for doing long distance rides when running out of energy and cramping becomes issues?

Go to http://www.e-caps.com/ tells you about the products, but also one of the best sources of sports endurance nutrition to be found anywhere. These folks are bikers/triathletes/runners/swimmers themselves (particulary prone to being bike geeks) and this is their passion/expertise as well as their business.

Your first century - under 5 hours - super impressive! Even more impressive to me as I've not yet accomplished the feat.

Having a good group to ride with must make a great deal of difference, but the group didn't pedal that Bacchetta, so be proud of your accomplishment.

This guy is a great natural rider and this is just the beginning.
On my ride last thursday I did about 80 miles my average speed was 21 mph. My tires were heavy conti gatorskins on an old set of Velocity sparticus wheels. Nothing high end here yet I do have an Aero with a reynolds speedy carbon fork.
todays ride I switched to high end Vredstein Fortezza tires at 145 psi. Same wheels. 60 plus miles at over 22 mph average speed. On both rides I never got off the bike. I had only water and on the 80 miler only a cliff bar and water.
these were just training rides and I was not at race pace. Even faster speeds are possible solo if you concentrate and really put the power down. But this is tough and those type of high end rides hurt but that's what you have to do if you want to ride fast in any type of ultra cycling event like a Brevet or a 12/24 hour race.
Keep riding dude your only going to get faster....

some of you must be fit, I can only dream of a 5 hour century. I did a century a few weeks ago and it took me more like 7.5 hours although that was including a cake stop and with a full camping load on a trike.

Hey Nic,
SK has a pretty full rack of Hammer products at The Hub. There are even plunger thingies on each flavor of gel now so you can try them out. Use gel or Perpetuem for energy and Endurolytes for cramping. Check it out on your next trip west.

Thanks JV. And I did head up to Hays Tuesday and took my bike out and rode with SK and had a GREAT 40+ mile RIDE!!!! I also tried out some of the gel tests SK and JS has on display. For right now I'm trying to loose my excess gel (20-30 lbs worth). But now I know where to get my supply of supplements when I loose the weight!!!!
